Members of the public can choose between 789 proposals to improve the city

The second edition of the participatory budgets (2024-2027) now enters the prioritisation stage, with local people in Barcelona able to choose the proposals they would like to see implemented in their neighbourhoods. Voting will be conducted from 10 to 17 March, and over the following weeks municipal staff will be working together with members of the public to define the technical details of the projects that receive the most votes.

The 789 proposals going into the prioritisation stage will be voted on via the decidim.barcelona platform from 10 to 17 March. Each person will be able to give their support for up to ten projects which they regard as the most relevant of all those presented around the city. The process will be used to come up with a shortlist of 23 projects for each district, with these to go into the final voting stage.

During the process to gather proposals, decidim.barcelona recorded over 10,000 participants and 130,000 unique visits to the platform. Between the ten city districts, 1,733 proposals were presented, with a team of over 100 municipal specialists subsequently evaluating them before finally validating 789 proposals. Of these, 93 were already planned by the City Council and will be executed outside of this process.

In terms of the proposals to go into the prioritisation stage, most of these correspond to the category for the transformation of streets. The second category with the most proposals is the one for improving public municipal facilities, followed by the category for urban greenery.

One of the new aspects to this second edition is the inclusion of mechanisms for children and young people also to be able to take part more directly. Of the projects presented, a total of 224 (between 15 and 30 per district) will be prioritised by children in 10 sessions to be organised in the districts between 3 and 17 March, with the two projects gaining the most votes to go through to the final vote.
